Victim: William
R. Almanzar, Age 35. Location:
Inside his apartment at Sheffield Court, Reading, PA. Date/Time
Incident Discovered/Occurred:
June 17, 1996.
Synopsis:
Reading Police is investigating the death of William R. Almanzar, an
immigrant from the Dominican Republic, who lived with a woman and her
two children. Almanzar was found inside his Sheffield Court
Apartment after police received a call at about 10:45 a.m. from a woman
who said she believed Almanzar was dead inside. Officers met the
woman outside the locked apartment. After forcing open the door,
police found Almanzar lying face down and wearing only a pair of
shorts. The first floor of the apartment was ransacked, but it was
unknown if anything was taken. Police said that Almanzar's
death was probably drug related. The apartment seemed to generate an
unusual amount of traffic, both vehicles and pedestrians, which is consistent
with reports that he sold illegal drugs from his residence.
Investigators are hoping that more than a decade later, people may be
more willing to talk to police.

Victim: Lyssette
R. Hernandez, Age 25. Location:
Inside her residence in the 300 Block of Schuylkill Avenue, Reading, PA. Date/Time
Incident Discovered/Occurred:
October 25, 1993.
Synopsis:
Reading Police is investigating the stabbing death of Lyssette
Hernandez, who was found face down between two beds in a second floor
bedroom by her brother, 15, who had just returned home from
school. She had been stabbed more that 50 times, mostly in the
upper back. City police said that four children were in the home
when their mother was murdered. But those children, ages 4, 3, and
1, were all too young to help in the investigation. A neighbor
reported hearing a man and woman arguing that morning but didn't think
much of it at the time. The neighbor reported that the man spoke
both English and Spanish.
Investigators
are hoping to rattle the memories of people who may have heard or seen
anything at the time of the murder, or since. The passage of time
hasn't eased the family's pain.
Police
are hoping someone who knows something about the murders will come forward
with information to identify a suspect.

Victims: Jose
M. Otero Jr., Age 27 and Carlos M. Rosario, Age 23. Location:
900 Block of North 11th Street, Reading, PA. Date/Time
Incident Discovered/Occurred:
Gunshots were heard at about 2:30 AM on August 24, 2000.
Synopsis:
Reading Police is investigating the shooting deaths of Jose Otero and
Carlos Rosario, who were found shot inside a car which was double parked
and idling with its four-way flashers on in the 900 Block of N. 11th
Street. A nearby resident heard
two shots at about 2:30 AM and saw a male get out from the back seat of
the car and run north to Windsor Street. The resident approached
the car and discovered the tow victims slumped over in the front
seats. Both men had been shot in the back of the head and later
pronounced dead at the scene.
Police
have said that Rosario and Otero were both involved in the illegal drug
trade, but police don't know a motive for the killings.
A
few weeks before the murders, police received a report that three men
with rifles were outside Rosario's residence in the 1100 block of
Buttonwood Street looking for him. Unlike Rosario, Otero had no
known ties to Reading, which led detectives to speculate early in the
investigation that Rosario was the main target. The
gunman was described as a dark-skinned male in his late teens to early
20's with a crew cut, baggy jeans and a white T-shirt.
Police
are hoping someone who knows something about the murders will come forward
with information to identify a suspect.

L. Matousek, age 24. Location:
416 South 14 1/2 Street, Reading Date/Time
Incident Discovered/Occurred:
July 7, 2001 early AM.
Synopsis:
Reading Police is investigating the shooting death of Shawn Matousek
who was shot while sleeping on his living room couch while his parents
were sleeping upstairs. Shawn's parents remember hearing him come
home at about 2:30 in the morning.
After hearing the sound of a gunshot, the parents awoke and ran
downstairs to find their son lying lifeless on the sofa.

Robbery is not believed to be the motive. It's as though someone
just walked in the door, put the gun to Shawn's head and pulled the
trigger. Leaving police with the task of trying to find out why
someone would want Shawn dead?
Investigators are focusing their attention on what happened earlier that
night. Shawn was seen at the Beverly Hills Tavern earlier that
evening with several friends. They were going from bar to bar that
night and they ended up at Sonny's Woodward Cafe. They ran into a
group that they didn't get along with and a fight started. One of
the men Shawn was with got into a fight. They left the bar shortly
afterwards. Police believe that the shooting may have involved the
group in the fight.

Louise
M. Weyandt, pictured above in a photo supplied by her family, was found
murdered near the Penn Street Bridge in April 1993. Victim: Louise
M. Weyandt, age 35 Location:
Base
of the Penn Street Bridge, City
of Reading
Date/Time
Incident Discovered/Occurred:
April
9, 1993.
Synopsis:
On April 9, 1993, Louise, 35, of 154 Walnut
St. was found nude with five large rocks piled on top of her at the base
of a Penn Street Bridge support by three men going to fish in the
Schuylkill River there that day. The cause of death was
compression of the neck and chest caused by the rocks put on top of her
while she was lying there, according to the Berks County coroner's
office. The homicide was one of the more unusual of the roughly 200
slayings in the city since 1990. The rocks used to kill Weyandt
and cover her body were heavy. That area near the river was not
all paved in 1993. There were rocks still around from the bridge
construction decades earlier. Weyandt was seen leaving her
residence about 11 p.m. the night before heading to a store in the 300
block of Penn Street for cigarettes. She was also seen a short
time later in the block with two males. The crime scene yielded
DNA and other evidence.
UPDATE:
Steven
Simpson was arrested in December 2005 and charged with the murder of
Louise Weyandt.
